Issue 8: Lab notes

April 28, 2023

Dearest reader,

I hope this message finds you in a moment of peace, and that you’ve been able to connect with something that provided you with a sense of inner expansion since we last connected.

I spent a good amount of last week working on the final mix, master, and cover art for a song that’s now been submitted for distribution and which is planned to go live on streaming services next month on the 19th of May. The project is called “Well Drained Slow” and is a personal, contemplative piece I wrote in the summer of 20201.

Every time I mix something I’m reminded how much of a self-contained art form audio engineering is. It’s a universe of its own.

I put a fair amount of what I hope translates as “soul” into this song, and I’d be delighted if some of that has made it through in the final recording. I’m excited for you to hear the track in its finished form and am curious to get a sense of how you receive it.

I shared the final mix with one person—my sister—before submitting it for distribution. I am eternally grateful for the privilege of having access to her creative intuition, wisdom, and guidance as I continue this journey.2

Thank you for being here.

Love,
Reef

  1. Yes! It’s the same track I alluded to in Issue 6. I’m excited to report that this newsletter seems to be helping with release accountability thus far. 😁

  2. A few of you may have heard this song back when I shared the original draft in June 2020 while living and working in Boston.
